Copyrights

Copyright registrations must be protected and enforced. Squire Sanders lawyers have extensive experience in all aspects of copyright protection, including registration, licensing and transfer agreements, as well as in the prevention of unauthorized use. Our lawyers are also experienced in assessing, prosecuting and defending copyright liability issues in world markets.
Beyond our experience in traditional industries, our lawyers have worked extensively on copyright issues relating to newer media such as the Internet, electronic publishing, computer software, semiconductor chips and other nontraditional copyright areas as diverse as equestrian products.
The advent of e-commerce has raised numerous new issues in copyright law and the applicability of copyrights to cyberspace. Our lawyers are thus experienced in analyzing the interpretation of copyright law as it applies to using, displaying and distributing website content over the Internet including such issues as linking and framing. We also are experienced in the latest developments of copyright laws as they apply to software and software development.
Regardless of the medium, we work hard to retain for our clients the rights to their creative ideas. Particularly where an infringement is taking place outside of the
United States, we have also found that the most effective and economical remedies for infringement may not necessarily be restricted to the legal system. In one especially difficult case involving copyright infringement in
Mexico, we brought an infringer of fabric designs to settlement and forced it to pay through a program of local advertisements, announcing the client’s strong policy of enforcing its intellectual property rights. Additional creative representations have included conducting a lobbying effort before the Russian Government and the State Duma for copyright protection on behalf of a major
US trade association; and assisting a
US publisher in its business by acquiring and protecting copyrights to Russian scientific journals.
