John Alderton is the managing partner of our Leeds office. His particular expertise covers restructuring, reorganisation and business support, lender security reviews and enhancement, as well as contentious and non-contentious insolvency and cross-border issues.

John advises banks and other financiers, insolvency practitioners and other insolvency professionals, directors and management teams, as well as creditors, on all issues arising in stressed and distressed scenarios both within the UK and cross-border.

Chambers UK describes John as “practical and pragmatic”. Commentators say he “focuses on the end result”. The Legal 500 UK says John is “Amongst the most commercial insolvency lawyers in Leeds”.

  • Redhall Group – Advising management and subsequently the administrators of this UK AIM-listed defence, engineering and construction group, including achieving going concern sales of viable parts of the group, managing novations of contracts from unprofitable parts of the group and managing an orderly close down of unviable parts of the group.
  • Create Construction – Advising the employer and key joint venture partner in rescuing key parts of the construction management business out of administration to enable novation and completion of a major construction contract.
  • Project Genesis – Advising a major UK construction and engineering group on the restructuring of an unprofitable subsidiary, including managing all major stakeholders, advising on novation/change of ownership provisions in relation to key contracts and addressing TUPE issues that were likely to arise on the sale or wind down of the relevant subsidiary.
  • Leeds City RIF – Advising the revolving investment fund on the funding of various construction and engineering projects, including contingency and enforcement options in the event of failure of projects, restructuring and refinancing of projects and strategic advice in relation to structuring of initial investments.
