Squire Sanders Expands East Asia Practice

12 December 2009

Global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. is adding corporate and litigation support for clients with business interests in East Asia. New partners Joon Yong Kim and David T. Miyamoto join Squire Sanders from Sidley Austin. Kim is based in Squire Sanders’ offices in Tokyo and Los Angeles; Miyamoto is in the Los Angeles office.

Firm Chair James J. Maiwurm said Kim and Miyamoto have extensive experience advising clients in Japan and Korea.

“Squire Sanders has a tradition of anticipating and quickly acting on client needs, such as moving to be one of the first US-based firms in many key markets,” Maiwurm said, adding that the firm was among legal industry leaders establishing an early presence in Central and Eastern Europe, China and Japan.

“David and Joon are very well respected in global business circles,” said Ken Kurosu, Squire Sanders’ Asia practice coordinator and managing partner of the firm’s Tokyo office.

“Joon acts on a global basis for several of Korea’s largest conglomerates. As such, he brings tremendous depth of experience in transactional matters, intellectual property (IP) litigation and commercial litigation,” Kurosu said, adding “David has represented and advised both Japan-based and Korea-based companies in international dispute resolution (IDR) matters, IP litigation and commercial litigation for more than 25 years.

“Their combined experience adds to our strong transactional practice in Asia, expands our IP litigation practice in Asia and strengthens our Japan-based commercial litigation practice,” Kurosu said.

Miyamoto’s Asia-based litigation experience also expands the firm’s abilities to represent Asia-based businesses in the United States, a longtime key component of the firm’s practice, noted James H. (Jake) Broderick, the Los Angeles office managing partner.

“I’m pleased to be part of the firm’s internationally known IDR practice and its strong US litigation practice,’’ Miyamoto said.

Kim said clients with traditional corporate and merger and acquisition needs will be well served by Squire Sanders’ tightly integrated corporate and corporate finance practice.

Kim received his J.D. in 1982 from Georgetown University Law Center, and his M.A. in 1979 and B.A. in 1976 from the University of Southern California. Miyamoto received his J.D. in 1981 and his B.A., cum laude, in 1978 from the University of California, Los Angeles.
