Squire Sanders Named Leading Firm in 2009 PLC Which lawyer? Yearbook

Lawyers across the globe earned strong ratings for telecom, corporate/M&A and dispute resolution work

London - Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. has been named to the Global 50 list of firms ranked in PLC Which lawyer? Yearbook. Global 50 ranking is reserved for law firm practices that earned the broadest range of client and peer recommendations. The yearbook, published by Practical Law Company (PLC), is a leading guide for in-house counsel.

“Squire Sanders’ ambitious global approach alongside its quality service has earned it a place amongst the top firms in the world,” researchers noted in the firm’s Global 50 Portrait. Here’s what researchers observed about the three ranked practices:

Corporate/M&A

Regarding the corporate/M&A practice, the guide stated, “Its strategy of focusing on emerging markets continues to drive the firm.” Squire Sanders was ranked a leading firm in the Slovak Republic’s corporate/M&A sector. Also highlighted was the firm’s work in Ukraine and Latin America, particularly Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil. “Its sector-led approach appeals to a broad spectrum of clients, especially in the telecoms, energy and manufacturing sectors.”

Highly recommended lawyers in the practice included Kevin T. Connor (Bratislava and Budapest), Mary Ann Jorgenson (Cleveland) and Gordon S. Kaiser Jr. (Cleveland). Also recommended were Squire Sanders’ corporate/M&A teams in the Budapest, Moscow, Prague, Caracas, Cleveland, Miami and Phoenix offices, as well as lawyers Julian Juhasz (Bratislava), Vladimira N. Papirnik (Prague), Frank M. Placenti (Phoenix), Joseph P. Richardson (Phoenix), Petr Slach (Prague) and David M. Wack (Moscow).

Dispute Resolution

Squire Sanders was named a leading provider of international dispute resolution (IDR) counsel in the Czech Republic. Offices in Beijing, Cleveland, Budapest and Bratislava were also highly rated. The guide stated the firm’s representation of major retailers in a massive 2008 pet food case “highlights the diversity of Squire Sanders’ dispute resolution practice.” Which lawyer? also noted the practice’s recent growth including trial lawyers joining the New York and Tokyo offices.

Highly recommended lawyers included Thomas S. Kilbane (Cleveland), Pedro J.
Martinez-Fraga (Miami), Iván Szász (Hungary) and Lubos Tichý (Czech Republic). Julian Juhasz (Bratislava), George M. von Mehren (Cleveland) and James M. Zimmerman (Beijing) were also recommended.

Telecommunications

Descriptions of the firm’s “long-standing and well-known” expertise in telecommunications matters, especially regulatory issues, included mentions of the high-profile European Union (EU) practice, the strong telecommunications and IT teams in London and New York, and projections of strong growth in Brazil.

Ann J. LaFrance (London and Brussels) was highly recommended for her EU telecommunications expertise. Other lawyers recommended for their telecommunications work were Joseph P. Markoski (London), Herbert E. Marks (Washington DC), Jonathan Jacob Nadler (Washington DC) and Thomas J. Ramsey (Brussels).
